Our Project
Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi is a transformational project for Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai - Lower Hutt. It includes crucial flood protection work, the Melling Transport Improvements, and Hutt City Centre urban revitalisation.
What's happening?
Transport Improvements at Melling
The existing State Highway 2 Melling intersection will be replaced with a safer, more efficient grade separated interchange, removing the existing Melling/Tirohanga traffic lights, as well as improving other transport improvements in Lower Hutt .
New Skatepark for Avalon Park
A new, state-of-the-art skatepark is being built at Avalon Park to provide the people of Lower Hutt a safe and modern space to skate, scoot and bike.
Mills Street stopbank
From late February to early October, we’re upgrading the existing stopbank between Melling Link Bridge and just north of Mills Street. During the construction of the Mills St stopbank, the Hutt River Trail and recreational area will be closed between Melling Link Bridge and Kennedy Good Bridge. The western path is still open in its entirety.
Geotechnical Investigations
Additional geotechnical investigations will be undertaken in the river corridor from 29th January. The works include drilling and probing the ground using geotechnical drill rigs and thrust machines to explore the ground up to 35m below the surface.
Utilities and Pavement Investigations
City wide site investigations including locating utilities such as power, fibre broadband and water assets, in addition to testing ground conditions, and assessing pavement thickness / materials will commence from 18th January 2024 through to June 2024.
Daly Street
The Daly Street area is a key site within the future plans for development. To deliver on the objectives above and our vision for this area, Hutt City Council acquired three buildings and surrounding sections along Daly Street.
Property Removal on Pharazyn, Marsden, Daly and Mills Streets
Removing properties will make room for the river by allowing stopbanks to be set further back from the river edge, and improve flood defences. It will also create new spaces for future development around the city centre.
Melling Line Closure
In August 2023, Greater Wellington councillors endorsed the closure of the Melling Line for up to 18 months from July 2024 for the construction of vital infrastructure.
Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River Gravel Extraction
During September and October 2023, gravel was extracted from Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River by Greater Wellington as part of the planned management of the riverbed.
