City Link Bridge
Information on this page was last updated on 17 April 2026.
A new walking and cycling bridge connecting public transport, the city centre and Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River.
What’s happening?
The City Link Bridge is a new pedestrian and cycle bridge that will connect the relocated Melling train station directly to Lower Hutt’s city centre.
It will act as a key gateway between the train station and the city centre, making it easier for people to move between public transport, the river and everyday destinations.
The bridge forms a key part of the wider transport and river improvements, creating a direct and accessible route between public transport and the city.
Why this work is important?
This bridge plays a central role in Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi — a programme transforming Lower Hutt through improved flood protection, transport connections, and city centre revitalisation.
As a key connection point, it helps bring people into the city and supports the wider transformation by linking major projects, including the new Melling station and riverside improvements.
It helps:
- Reconnect the city with the river
- Make it easier to move between train, city centre and surrounding areas
- Bring more people into the city centre and support local activity
- Support a more people-focused, connected city
What this means for you?
- A safer, more direct walking and cycling route
- Better access to public transport
- Easier connections between the river and city centre
- More people visiting and spending time in the city
