In preparation for construction of the new Melling interchange, the old skate park on Block Road, as well as buildings on High and Rutherford streets, and Queens Drive will soon be demolished.

Demolition will begin in March 2025, and will be completed on behalf of NZ Transport Agency as part of the Melling Transport Improvements project.

Work is scheduled to be completed by end of June 2025.

Note: Dates are subject to change pending contract confirmation and may be dependent on weather and other factors.

Worksites will be fenced and there may be some detours on local roads at times.

As part of this programme of work we will also look to recycle/reutilise as much material as possible.

Block Road skate park

Demolition of the old Block Road skate park will begin from 5 March 2025. The work should take approximately three weeks and during this time, several car parks in the adjacent Park and Ride will be unavailable. We apologise for any inconvenience.

This facility has been replaced by the new Moututawa Avalon skate park which opened late 2024.

Building demolition

As part of this programme of work, the following four buildings will be demolished:

  • 317 High Street
  • 51 Rutherford Street
  • 144 Queens Drive
  • 291-301 High Street

This will happen from the top down. Perimeter walls will then be removed before the foundations are demolished. We expect the foundation demolition to cause the most noise and vibration.
