Have your say on Streetscapes

Engagement is now underway for the Streetscapes project – part of Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi – to help shape the future of Lower Hutt's city centre. If you haven’t already, head to Have Your Say to share your experiences and tell us what features matter most.

The team rugged up in scarves and beanies at Riverside Market on Saturday 9 August to kick things off - thank you to everyone who braved the chill to stop by for a chat! We’ll be back at the Market on Saturday 30 August (weather permitting) and would love to see you there.

Keep an eye out for more chances to get involved, including drop-in sessions for businesses and the wider community.

Your ideas will help shape a city centre we can all be proud of.

Melling station closure in late December

Melling station is due to close in late December. There will be a lot of work happening in this area over the next few years – from construction of the new Melling interchange and the bridge that connects it with Lower Hutt, to strengthening the stopbanks along the river and building the City Link pedestrian bridge.

During this time the Melling line will terminate at Western Hutt.

Metlink is putting together a range of travel options to keep you moving with ease throughout the closure. As plans take shape, they’ll share updates so you can feel confident about your journey.

In the meantime, you can explore and keep track of the choices that suit you best through the journey planner on the Metlink app and website.

Reminder: Find out what’s happening between now and Christmas

Check out the list of the main construction activities already underway and planned to start between now and December to help you know what’s happening.

We’ll keep adding information about the activities to this page, including what’s planned for 2026 and beyond. We’re committed to minimising the impact of construction as much as possible during this project. But large infrastructure projects like this are complex and disruption will be inevitable.

We’ll make sure access to and from the city and state highway are maintained throughout construction and will be providing information on upcoming disruption as construction progresses.

We appreciate your patience and understanding and encourage everyone to look out for one another when more construction starts later this year.

Email us if you have any questions about the programme.

For businesses: Opportunities for businesses to get involved in the programme

All the programme partners are focused on providing opportunities for local businesses, workers and suppliers throughout this large programme of works.

Greater Wellington has already begun stopbank construction and river works along Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River. Later this year, NZ Transport Agency will begin the Melling Transport Improvements main construction works and Hutt City Council will begin design work on the CityLink bridge from 2026. As more opportunities arise to tender for work, we will notify businesses.

More information on work for tender will be shared in future updates. In the meantime, fill out a Registration of Interest in projects being delivered across the whole programme.

Find more information about procurement.

You can also email our team with any questions.
