Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi Community Update 12: August 2024

Newsletters, Te Awa Kairangi Project Team, 15 August 2024

Demolition serving Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo

We’re clearing land to make way for Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi. With most sites now cleared to ground level, we need to remove what’s left. Starting with plants and trees, we’ll then remove concrete slabs, driveways, foundations and redundant underground utilities. Work is expected to be completed in January 2025.

Some of the plants removed were gratefully accepted by our friends at Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo.

New Avalon skatepark to open this summer

Construction of the new skatepark at Avalon Park is underway, with the new park due to open this summer. The 1,300m2 skatepark has been designed by Convic with input from local skatepark users. It will have six zones for skaters of all levels, equipped with a mini bowl, quarter pipes, a slappy curb, mini ramp and a 5-sided funbox.

It’s being built to replace the outgoing Melling skatepark, needed for the new Melling Interchange (part of Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi), as well as the older Avalon facility which has been recently demolished to make way for the new park.

Mana Whenua have also been involved with designs to include kōwhaiwhai (cultural patterns) and pou, acknowledging the cultural significance of Motutawa Pā, which once stood nearby. A new half-basketball court will be built near the skatepark, alongside features such as park furniture, improved lighting and CCTV cameras to ensure the park can be safely enjoyed.

Why the Melling Interchange looks different to others in Lower Hutt

There’s a lot to consider at Melling, including the many needs of the interchange and how tight and complex the environment is. Because of this, a roundabout approach (like Dowse and Haywards interchanges) wasn’t an appropriate design.

The new interchange we’re going to build will ensure people travelling to and from Lower Hutt can safely exit the state highway without having to cross traffic lights in high-speed areas. It will also replace the two existing intersections (Melling and Tirohanga) with a grade-separated interchange.

While traffic lights will be needed on the interchange itself, there won’t be any on the state highway. These will be phased to manage the flows of traffic to and from Lower Hutt.

The off-ramps will also be longer and separated, preventing queuing on the highway.
