What cycle options will be provided, both on State Highway 2 and around the project area?

An alternative cycle route alongside the river will be built as a safer alternative to State Highway 2 (SH2). It will connect to the Te Ara Tupua cycleway and extend North to Melling station, and on to Kennedy Good Bridge intersection. This route will be separated from other users (such as pedestrians) and be designed to provide for commuter and road cyclists.  The route along SH2 to the north of Melling Interchange (outside of the project area) is significantly constrained and not considered safe, given the proximity to fast-moving vehicles. A connection will also be available from the Melling station to the East over the new pedestrian/cycle bridge to Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai - Lower Hutt central city.

Throughout the project area we will build a range of walking and cycling paths. Busy, fast biking routes will have separated or segregated paths with smooth surfaces (with clearly marked 'lanes' for walking and for people on bikes). Other areas may have a range of surfaces and will be shared paths for walking and cycling.
